The Heart of Howard: A Community of Kindness, Respect, and Joy

Last week I enjoyed an evening of watching our boys’ Varsity basketball team play (and win!) a game in our gym. A parent came and sat with me for a bit. We watched the game, cheered, and visited.  As he left to go high five his son after the game, I noticed that he took with him an empty bag of potato chips, an empty coke can, and a candy wrapper.  All of that trash was there when he walked up into the bleachers; none of it was his.

Random Acts of Kindness Week: Bingo Challenge!

Dear High School Parents/Guardians,

Our school is excited to celebrate Random Acts of Kindness Week from Monday, February 10, to Friday, February 14, 2025! As part of this event, High School students will receive a Bingo Card with various acts of kindness to complete throughout the week. Some of these activities will take place at home, and we need your help!

Your Role as a High School Parent/Guardian:

Watch for Acts of Kindness – Keep an eye out for your child completing one of the kindness activities listed on their Bingo Card at home.

Sign Their Bingo Card – If you catch your child doing one of the listed activities, please ask for their Bingo Card and sign it in the appropriate box.

Remind Them to Hold On to Their Card – Students are responsible for keeping their Bingo Cards safe throughout the week.

Turn in by Friday, February 14 – Students must submit their completed Bingo Cards to their Advisors during morning advisory on Friday, February 14, 2025.

Thank you for encouraging kindness at home and helping make this a successful and meaningful week for our students! - Counseling Team

Understanding Executive Function and How It Impacts Academic Success

Parents, get ready to gain critical insights into one of the most important yet least understood aspects of learning success! Join us for a Parent Education Session on Executive Function on February 12 at 8:30 am in the Blackbox Theater, featuring The Howard School's Executive Function Experts and Speech Language Pathologists Victoria Bondurant and Joseph Walsh.

What is Executive Function?
Executive function is the brain's management system – think of it as the "CEO of the brain" that helps students plan, organize, manage time, focus attention, and regulate emotions. These crucial cognitive skills are fundamental to academic achievement and lifelong success.

In this parent education session you'll learn:

  • How executive function skills impact learning and academic performance
  • Signs of executive function challenges in students
  • Practical strategies to support your child's cognitive development

The session will provide research-backed insights and actionable strategies that can make a real difference in your child's educational journey. Whether your child is struggling with homework, time management, or staying focused, this session offers valuable tools for parents.
